STATEMENT:

My recent focus is on capturing the feeling, the light and the mood in a painterly way on canvas. I utilize Oil Paint and loose brush work, color and atmospheric perspective to try and capture the fleeting moment or sensation rather than sharp detail.

My artistic journey began with delving into the complexities of spatial ambiguities, incorporating the interplay between hard and soft forms, geometry, and line. The picture plane serves as a dynamic stage where both the literal and illusionistic qualities coexist, inviting the observer to engage in a visually captivating experience. My intuitive approach to art revolves around mark making, texture, color, line, and movement. Working primarily with acrylics, I utilize collage elements and drawing to further enrich and develop my creations. Described as Mystical-Cerebral moments in time, my paintings offer ever-changing landscapes, reflecting the turbulence of my internal emotions.

Bio

Born in Honolulu and raised in Niu Valley on the Island of Oahu, my early years were deeply influenced by my mother’s boarding house in Waikiki and my father’s passion for art, photography, painting, and drawing. My travels between Hawaii and California shaped my love for surfing and led me to attend Junior College in California. Eventually, I returned to Hawaii, completing my undergraduate studies and receiving a BFA Degree from the University of Hawaii. Continuing my pursuit of art, I pursued my Master’s graduate work at Michigan State University and taught Painting and Drawing there.

Throughout my life, I explored diverse paths, from teaching in the Community College system in Hawaii to running a restaurant and coaching high school rowing in Ann Arbor, Michigan. However, my love for painting and drawing remained unwavering. Presently residing in Ann Arbor, Michigan, I continue to create art, and my work can be found in the Hawaii State Art Museum Collection and various private collections in Hawaii, California, Oregon, Washington, and Michigan.
